[Info] Starting WinVICE, you get an error "The instruction at 0x00000000 referenced memory at 0x00000000."
The information in this article applies to the following versions of VICE:
- all Windows versions from 1.11 to 1.14 on Windows NT4.0
SYMPTOMS
When trying to start an emulator, you get the error message "[X64.EXE - Application Error] The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000." The memory could not be "read". [...]".
CAUSE
On some installations of Windows NT 4.0, the DLL psapi.dll is not installed on the system, although it should be.
SOLUTION
You can download the missing DLL at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=3D1FBAED-D122-45CF-9D46-1CAE384097AC and install it into the VICE directory. Newer versions of VICE don't need psapi.dll if it is not available, so this should not affect you on never versions.
STATUS
This document is for information purpose only. The behaviour reported is intentional in the VICE versions listed at the beginning of this article.
