[Info] Starting VICE, you only get a blank screen

The information in this article applies to the following versions of VICE:

PROBLEMEXPOSITION

Running VICE on a Linux machine, you only get a blank screen. The windows get focus, but there are no VICE menus. You can't even kill the windows from the window button.

EXPLANATION

These symptoms are usually a sign that VICE blocked as it tried to open the sound device.

SOLUTION

Try to start with sound playback disabled or close any programs which have also opened the sound device.
