[Info] The sound is delayed while using my favorite program.

The information in this article applies to the following versions of VICE:

SYMPTOMS

When trying to play a game or to run another program on the emulator, the sound is delayed and not exactly like it is on the real machine.

CAUSE

VICE needs to buffer some sound snippets before playing them, so there is a delay between generating and playing a sound which is caused architecturaly. Anyway, by adjusting some settings, the effect can be minimized.

SOLUTION

Just lower the sound buffer size in the sound settings as long as your sound sounds well and you don't get any dropouts. You can adjust this setting by using the command-line option -soundbufsize <value> or using the UI interface.

STATUS

This document is for information purpose only. The behaviour reported is intentional in the VICE versions listed at the beginning of this article.
