[Info] Game image seems corrupt/does not start/fails on run
The information in this article applies to the following versions of VICE:
- all versions
SYMPTOMS
When trying to play a game or to run a program on the emulator, the program run in the emulator crashes or behaves unexpected.
CAUSE
There are several possible causes for this behaviour. The following is a list (in non-specific order) of these:
- The Program does not like "loosing" precision of emulation;
- The program needs true drive emulation enabled (applies to disk images only);
- The program needs virtual device traps disabled (applies to disk images only);
- The program uses very exact synchronization between floppy and computer (applies to disk images only);
- The program image is corrupted.
- Some other settings are not correct.
SOLUTION
To get the program to run, try the following one by one (in the given order):
- Disable WARP mode;
- Enable true drive emulation on the emulator;
- Disable virtual device traps;
- Use "idle method: NONE" in each of the drives' settings;
- enable reSID (which emulates the SID's behaviour much more correctly;
- use 1/1 refresh rate for the video;
- Try to get another game image; the best choice is to try another source.
Notice that the suggested settings to VICE affect performance, so you should only select them if you encounter this specific problem.
STATUS
This document is for information purpose only. The behaviour reported is intentional in the VICE versions listed at the beginning of this article.
